interesting...
from R.C. Sproul Jr.
Should Christians be on Facebook? What about all the privacy issues that are in the news these days?
I sometimes wonder if the devil doesn’t take great pleasure in irony, in watching us turn ourselves inside out while missing the point. While I am on Facebook, and therefore at least hold to a tentative conviction that such is allowable for Christians, there are any number of reasons to raise concerns over it. Privacy and the lack thereof, however, would likely be the last one I would raise. With Facebook’s very public and controversial announcement of its change in policy with respect to privacy, that, however, is what has many Christians concerned. How, I wonder, can a person take a technology that exists to say to the watching world, “Here I am. Come see about me” complain that the world is coming to see about them? Anyone who wishes more privacy can find such easily enough. Don’t use Facebook. If you already do, stop. We are in a moral uproar for all the wrong reasons. We are aghast at the owners of Facebook for daring to change their policy (which, remember, the original policy held out as at their discretion) rather than being appalled at ourselves for implicitly breaking the 8th Commandment. We think because we are a user of Facebook that such makes us an owner of Facebook, and so demand this and demand that from the real owners.
That said, here are some very real concerns I have about Facebook. First, has it become a god to us? When God commands that we have no other god’s before Him He doesn’t mean ranked higher than Him, but rather He means in His presence. If Facebook is too needful for you, you may need to stop. Second, has it become a graven image? Have you confused its reality with real reality? Do you really think you have 200 friends? Third, have you taken the Lord’s name in vain? That is, have you, in weaker moments, put a bad face publicly on your Christian witness? Are you laughing at your old sins with that old buddy from college or high school?
Fourth, is Facebook giving me the peace of the Lord, or agitating me? (And please note the very real difference between that peace that passes understanding and that “peace” we receive when we feed a habit, when we get a fix.) Am I jumpy when I don’t get to log on? Am I more keyed up after I’ve logged off? Fifth, am I honoring those in authority over me? Wives, are you failing to honor your husbands because you’re too busy reading about your friends? Children, are you failing to honor your parents because you’re too busy sending flair?
Sixth, is this technology honoring to life? The cyberworld can be a barren wasteland, not because it is filled with pornography and gambling, but because it isn’t real, because it is Gnostic. Seventh, are you loving your spouse on Facebook? Is the rush of nostalgia from finding long lost friends encouraging you to be dissatisfied? Are you secretly looking for that old girlfriend? Are you already caught up in adultery simply by wishing you could be sixteen again? Or do you not know that Facebook can all too easily devolve into relational pornography? The allure of porn is that you think you can have the joys of the sexual union without having to have a real relationship with a real person. The allure of Facebook is much the same. Eighth, are you stealing from your employer by not giving a full days work because you are moonlighting at Farmville, or as a Mafia Don? Or, simply because you are spending your hours at work at play?
Ninth, are you lying? That is, is the you you present on Facebook the real you? This technology has an insidious capacity to both hide reality and fool us into thinking we are both showing and seeing it. Why are our updates all about our victories- I just made cookies for the family; My son just hit the game winning home run; rather than our failures- I just shouted at my little girl; I left my computer on the airplane and it’s gone? Keep a particularly close eye on this one. And tenth, is Facebook encouraging contentment or resentment? Are you coveting your neighbor’s friend count? Are you jealous of how many “likes” there are for his posts compared to yours? And are you content with the real life you are shutting out while hunched over your keyboard?
Please don’t misunderstand this little thought experiment. I suspect we could walk through the Ten Commandments in light of our church, and find many of the same temptations. That doesn’t mean you should stay away from church. It does mean we ought to be deliberate enough to know what we are doing, and why we are doing it. And deliberate begins by affirming that our own hearts are not just desperately wicked, but deceitful as well. We don’t need to protect our privacy. We need instead to expose our sins to the light, the light of Scripture that we might repent and believe, that His face might shine upon us.

My prayer

Love this guy!!
Lest we see the sinner’s prayer as mere technique, we must remember that Christ raises the dead that they might walk. We do not mumble the magic words and then wait to die. Christianity is about spiritual growth as well. It is about work, the hard work of sanctification. Regeneration is monergistic, God’s work alone. Sanctification, the process by which we are made holy, is synergistic, God’s work with us.
God’s part is easy for Him. He needs no shortcuts because He never tires. We, though, must ever fight the temptation to seek the shortcut. No technique will make us holy. No technique of the Devil’s, though, can stop the process of Christ making us into His image. Those whom He calls He sanctifies.
Our sanctification requires the Spirit of God and, because He has so ordered His world, sanctification requires the disciplined and repeated use of the means of grace. Five minutes a day of Bible study smells like technique. Arid, it is sure to fail. We must immerse ourselves in the Word of God. Then, as Jesus promised, we will know the truth and the truth will set us free. Then we will be His disciples (John 8:31–32)." -- RC Sproul

Who cares??

"Who cares? Do you care?
I care… well sometimes I do. I probably don’t care as much as I think I do, or as much as I ‘should’. I want to care, I want to help, I want to love! The problem is…me!
In the past year my family has encountered some of the most caring people we have ever met, and then, on the other hand, we have also been around ‘the others’.
People who care are an amazing set of individuals, who I am incredibly grateful for and challenged by. People who care demonstrate love and compassion, empathy, selflessness, and a host of other traits that meet the deep needs of the hurting and truly bear each others burdens.
‘The others’ are also an interesting group, some of these don’t care and don’t even care that they don’t care, and still others think they care but really their care is only towards their own well-being, which I don’t think fits the definition of what I am talking about.
If there is anything I have learned about myself in the past year it is that on most days I fit in better with ‘the others’ than with the people who care. Honestly, I hate this about myself and something has to change. For years, I have often been admonished to care, by statements such as…
-People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care!
-Galatians 6:2Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
So what’s my problem? That’s the wrong question, the more proper question is what are my problems, there are a lot of them. However, here is I think, the root of the problem. I don’t care, because I am not receiving the care I need. Too often, I look to lesser things to meet my ultimate needs and the desires of my heart. These lesser things bring false fulfillment and leave me longing for more and looking to other sources. All the while, I have a gracious and powerful Father who offers me this…
1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Only when I humbly place my cares in God’s mighty hands, and receive his love am I fully prepared to show others the care they so desperately need. So my conclusion has to be this…Remember ‘the others’, the ones that don’t seem to care, they are not living in or experiencing the unfailing love of God. They are not being filled with his mercy and compassion, for if they were they couldn’t help but to love people radically and care selflessly for the hurting.
The solution: Humble yourself by looking to Jesus, the one whose eyes are full of compassion and hands are mighty to save, or to just give you a hug. Take all of your personal cares, anxiety, worries and everyday give them to Jesus. Why? The answer to why, is the answer to my initial question…Who cares? Jesus cares! Jesus cares and is the spring of life and love, the God of compassion and our example of sacrificial, redeeming love." - Aaron McRae

Summer

This summer looks much different than last. It, to be honest, has been a struggle for me and something that I had to wrestle out with God.
Last summer it was a summer of fun, traveling, and literally just kinda flying by the seat of my pants. I took in two great pro baseball games, traveled to Branson, Fayetteville, Lakeside, Mackinac, St. Louis, Chicago, Hawaii, and on and on. I went to Cedar Point and finally got on the top thrill dragster. It was just a fun summer and I didn't have to work, I had plenty of money, and a fun traveling buddy.
This summer I had to "grow-up". I got a full time job, going to school full time, raising two, now official, teenage sons, teach one to drive, and no "buddy" to hang with.
There has been a little bit of bitterness cause not everyone is having my summer. Out of no where it hit me.
IT'S NOT BETTER THAN GOD!!!
Last summer is not better than GOD. Wondering if I am offending, doing what God is calling me to do, leading someone astray, not being faithful, forgoing friends. Don't get my wrong it was by far the funnest summer of my adult life but...
NO, LAST SUMMER IS NOT BETTER THAN GOD.
This summer is about GOD and that is BETTER!!!

Wrestling it out
This is my little place that each morning I sit on my little trunk at the end of my bed and have my time with God. Something that Beth Moore and Matt Chandler both say quite a bit is to “wrestle it out with God.” I think about that a lot. Beth Moore talks about us having questions, not hiding our disappointments and devastations but just asking God to help us through them. I’ve had my share of disappointments and I have been devastated before, not that long ago, but here’s the thing. It takes time and as you walk through that time you want your character to be strengthened.
The picture of my last devastation and one that I am still healing from has not been pretty. There have been times I have just kinda looked back and said, “did I really just do that, is that really the way I just responded?"
Here’s the truth. God’s will for our lives are filled with sanctification, submission, and suffering. Through all of this we are called to obey. To do it as graceful as possible and with thanksgiving for God’s great mercy.

Providence.......
Well, I am finally feeling settled here in Texas. Life is so full of twists and turns that sometimes it just leaves us stunned. I would have to say I’ve had a few months like that in the last three years. I would have never dreamed I would end up in Texas back in school full time. Nor would I have dreamed that journey would take me through Hawaii. It’s been good, not to say it’s not been hard but it has been good.
I would love to say that everything went great. That things unfolded smoothly, friendships all stayed in tack, and things that feel apart I was able to mend. That wasn’t the case for me but I don’t think it is for many so that’s okay.
One thing I have learned these last few weeks is that God provides more sweet providences than bitter. Sometimes we just don’t see it that way. In the book of Ruth Naomi has lost her husband, her two sons, and one daughter-in-law and she professes that the Lord has dealt bitterly with her. That she went away full and was sent back empty. I can’t say that there have not been a few occasions that I have not wanted to agree. But in what appears to be a bitter providence God has given her much sweet providence as well. She has a wonderful daughter-in-law who as pledged to not leave her side. She was returned to a land that has no famine. I read this story and although I have not suffered death I can easily feel sorry for myself and feel bitterness wanting to show it’s ugly face in my life. I want everyone to be happy, I want second chances at friendships, and I want to never have to suffer. I could really go on all day….
God is good!!!! He knows my comings and my goings. He has my days planned before I ever wake and so in light of that good news I accept what I might momentarily want to see as bitter providence and I hold out for that beautiful day when I see his sweet face and rejoice with the King of Glory!!!!

Few things!!
I have a few things tonight. It has been awhile since I got on here. I am going to make more of an effort since I am no longer on facebook. I have closed my account. Judi gives me one week and Drew is going with three days. It kinda feels good to not be so controlled by facebook. It seems that I was checking it constantly all day long. For those people that live away from us they know my blog address and can keep up with us that way
So it has been a crazy day!! Started out working at The Village and it turns out they had me down for the wrong day and I didn’t work after all. I will be next Friday though. I love that little job. It’s great to get to know everyone from church and hang out. I then tried to go to the library to study and it was closed. Then went to two different Starbucks both were full with no tables. Then landed at one that was so crazy loud I couldn’t focus. Ugh……… Tried to eat healthy by going to Subway for a veggie sandwich and had to wait 25 minutes cause only one guy was working and could of cared less how long the line was becoming. Just one crazy day!!!!
I got a new MacBook Pro last week and I am not picking it up very well at all. In the morning Kent is going to set me up with a guy in Nashville that is somehow going to take over my computer from Nashville and do everything I need and get all the stuff set up the way I want. Meanwhile, I was at Barnes and Noble tonight and guess what I bought.
The biggest news of all is our little addition to the family. He is weighing in at one pound and won’t get any bigger than five pounds. He’s such a great little guy and sleeping all night, not crying, and potty training like a champ. Poor Drew and Hunter didn’t hold a candle to our new little Maximus. We call him Max.
Hope everyone has a good weekend!!

Texas!!
In all my tiredness I was a little emotional last night. I know it's hard to believe, me emotional. Ha Ha yes, I'm laughing with all of you. But God has given me some much needed quiet time this morning and I was reading a friends blog and read down her list of things that she was thankful for and it just spurred me to realize how very blessed I am. In all the chaos of life I have so much. So here goes my list..................
1. First and foremost I have to say God's word. I have been doing this study of God's love and I had put it down for a few days with the move. Well, I got back into it this morning and had about 10 verses to record. I am up to nine pages right now and it just blessed me and gave me such peace. God's word is so unbelievably rich. Find a guide if you need to but start recording His word. You will be astonished at how life changing it can be when you just submerge yourself in it. Okay, I'll get off my soap box!!!!
2. My family! These boys have been through so much in the last two years and while they still can pick and fight with each other they are wonderful children. They have held it together and we have stuck together through a lot. I couldn't do it without them and their funny, quirky ways. At that end of if all they always make me laugh!!!!!
3. My friends! Through all of this God has just so beautiful placed the gift of friends all along the way when I have needed it most. My friends are as goofy as I and I LOVE TO LAUGH WITH THEM.
4. Don't worry food is coming up!! We got to try some of the coolest food while we lived in Hawaii. Yes, we love SPAM!!! Had a great Thanksgiving feast with our friends the Kinney's. Already had some great BBQ here in Texas.
5. I don't want to leave out all the little blessing we don't realize. Getting something on sale, having a stranger smile at us, a sweet little pat on the back from the guy at Walmart, the dollar menu, a great office episode, towels drying in one cycle and saving the quarters, the list goes on and on. It's these things that God gives us each day that let us know just how much He loves us. This is one of my favorite!!!
Okay, so there you have it. We're in Texas and we are so very thankful!!!!

God's Love and Laughter
All this to say that today I put that my little gift of God's love is laughter. I have been much more specific than that each day but today I started to type these things out and realized it was all laughter. I love to laugh. It's so much fun. I love laughing with people. I have this friend Joy and I think that's our most common interest that we share. We laugh are heads off. We quote the most random things from Arrested Development, The Office, Curb, Seinfeld, etc...... No one around us has a clue which just makes us laugh even harder. Here's the great thing, the office had this great opening last week and so I showed it to my fellow employees and they all just kinda looked at me. I was on the floor laughing so hard. Bam! in walks Joy and we just take off with the quotes. It was beautiful.
I have to just say I love God's little gifts and one of my favorite is laughter. Get on you tube, find something funny, grab a friend and laugh!!!!!!!!!!
